Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is quite recent trend and technology in IT. We started hearing about it back in 2010 however it is just 2014 when it really accelerated and took off. More and more businesses are taking advantage of moving the IT infrastructure to the so-called Cloud.
Cloud however is just the bunch of server racks, routers, switches, firewalls, etc. Cloud means that you can get access to your IT resources from anywhere. It aims to be a service (something like electricity) that we just expect to be there and work. Businesses often face dilema with moving their intrastructure to the cloud.
The concern is mostly around the security, the speed of the solution - access to resouces, initial cost - investment.
Very popular approach towards the Cloud is the hybrid migration. This means you can move certain services to the cloud and leave others on premise.
The biggest advantage of having the infrastructure in the Cloud is that you don't have to worry about your hardware maintenance - as you will delegate this to your Cloud provider. You could ofcourse choose to build your own Cloud however this appraoch may not be best for your needs.
There are many Cloud services providers on the market. The biggest and most popular are: Amazon, Microsoft Azure, Google. With Microsoft goes Office 365, with Google you can choose email and colaboration services. Each company's IT needs may be different. The trick is to find this out and suggest and match your business with the best solution.
Security
Security in IT is proabably one of the most talked about subjects in recent years. With the rapid rise in cyber crime and various hacking activites we are forced and urged to secure our IT systems both on enterprise and personal levels. Not that we weren't aware of securing our systems before however with very sophisticated hacking technics used these days we are much more than ever before prone to losing our data and what goes after that our money .
Security in your business IT infrastructure is very important however you shouldn't go too resrtictive with it or panic in any way.
It is crucial to remember that security shouldn't stay in the way of your business goals, your employees productivity and ability to reach to your clients.
Most businesses won't be targets for hackers or cyber cryminals as they don't have that much of interesting data. However other big players that you may interact or co-operate with through various Internet services most probably will.
That is why it is crucial to have simple security measures (e.g; passwords) sorted out .
Another common security threat that we probably never be able to get rid of are viruses. Most virues are only aimed to harm your device not steal data but with recent proliferation of viruses like heart bleed or ransomware you want to be sure that your anti-virus protection is up to date and strong or you have a system that can detect it before it hits your network. Again there are many AV software players and web security providers on the market that you need to choose between and make sure it won't impact your IT performance too much.
Mobility
Mobility overlaps and combines both of the previous columns. Cloud allows us to be mobile, to access our systems and applications on any device from anywhere even offline. The amount of mobile devices on the market is tremendous in recent years starting from thousands of smart phones, tablets through ultrabooks - combination of tablets and laptops to old school portable noteboks and laptops. As long as we are connected to public Internet or private networks we are expecting to be able to access our company resoures. Working remotely has been proved to increase our productivity and has definitely become very popular trend. There are business or professions that depend heavily on remote access and mobility in such IT systems is essential.
With this goes security. Since we take more and more data outside the business premisses - we need to ensure this data is safe and can be easily revoked or access to it is restrticted in the event of device being lost, stolen or your employees leaving the business. You want to be able to distinguish between corporate and personal data on the mobile device if this is your employees personal device.
All of this spells out another term that is growing in demend and popularity in recent year in IT. This term is called BYOD - Bring Your Own Device. Your employees want to be able to use their personal devices to access more and more of the company resources. This often puts to grave old concept of VPN in favour of growing speeds of public Internet connections.
To name few main players in this area of IT we could mention: MobileIron, Cisco Meraki, Microsoft or Citrix.
This is data mobility however there is also growing demand for Voice mobility. Here the main players would be Skype for business or Cisco Jabber. The choices are endless.
